I’m so glad to have one of my closest friends for the Your Own Boss series. This girl is one talented multi-tasker. She’s a wife, mom to two handsome little boys and her own boss at Real Cakes. She’s a shy person, but that didn’t stop Aysadeth from starting her own cake and cupcake business. Lets see how it all started.
Lets start from the beginning. How long have you been living in the Netherlands and why did you choose the Netherlands as your next residence?
I’ve been living in the Netherlands for 6 years now. I was born here but as a child I’ve been moving back and forth from the Netherlands to Curacao. This time I stayed here, because I started my own little family.
Why did you begin with Real Cakes?
I baked and decorated cakes as a hobby for a while and after I lost my job I started with Real Cakes.
What was the difficult part of starting on your own and being your own boss?
You really have to get out there to get new clients. I’m pretty shy, so seeking out clients isn’t easy for me. Another thing was figuring out the prices for my cakes and cupcakes.
Did you ever had a moment of failure?
Real failure no, but so now and then mistakes will be made. Like baking a cake to long or rolling out the fondant to thin.
What was one of your greatest success?
My first wedding cake was an order that came in 2 days before the wedding. In 1 day I made a whole wedding cake for 75 people and it still is one of my favorite cakes (see picture below).
And last weekend I made a wedding cake with matching cupcakes for a good friend of mine and that made it even more special. This one is now my favorite cake (see picture below).
What advice can you give to those who would like to be part of the YOB club?
Do all the research you need, so you would get any surprises and just go for it.
Lets take a look at the woman behind Real Cakes. Aysadeth, thanks for being part of this series. You’re a doll.
